This Wensleydale wool offering is from sheep in the Wensleydale area of North Yorkshire. Like BFL, Wensleydale is a British luster longwool. Although a bit coarser than BFL at 30-35+ microns, like BFL, Wensleydale also feels somewhat softer than its micron. The fibers are long, with some even presenting at 7+ inches. This long, strong, silky-looking wool often has a yellow-ish tinge but promotes intense dye results due to the luster. Each year there is a limited quantity of this Wensleydale type offered through the British Wool Marketing Board and, thus, it is one of their more expensive wools. While some vendors may unknowingly claim their wool as 100% from Wensleydale sheep, the vast majority of UK wool is sorted at the British Wool Marketing Board, which defines this as a Wensleydale “type,” typically also containing some Teeswater and Masham wools as there are similarities between them and many flocks in North Yorkshire are mixed with these three sheep. We have procured about 500# for 2023.
